I'm getting a new job! Actually, it looks more like a new career at this point.

Some background:

I came from vacation in Mexico (see: got engaged) to find out that my boss, Darcel, whom I admire like few other mentors in my life, was leaving my company to achieve greater things at another association. I was buuuuuummmed to say the least. I wasn't thrilled about staying here without her as she has been the greatest catalyst for my personal and professional development, and frankly, my company now is small fish. I would probably still be here, though, if it weren't for the fact that the day I casually starting looking at jobs and the job market, a pastor I know called and asked if I had ever considered youth ministry. This was one of the most amazing aligning of the stars I've ever been privvy to. I had, indeed, been interested for some time, but always thought business was the wise choice.

Well his phone call turned my entire world upside-down. After quite a bit of counceling from all my various mentors and much prayer, I have decided to jump in with both feet. For the month of September I'm going to be working here for forty hours a week and doing ten at Living Water, my new church home. AND this is going to be further complicated by the fact that I have:

Started my MBA! Tuesday night was my first night of class and I think I was really freaking out over nothing. It was a lot of fun. There were definite differences from my undergrad program, but I'm going to enjoy going to school with only adults who are there to better themselves like I am.

So, in review, this is my life as of late:

Got engaged

Started my MBA

Starting a new career

It's rather crazy right now, but I'm really REALLY excited for all these things, and I have my fiance's and my family's support, which means the world to me. Thank you, all.

My first thought was, "no, let's pick out a book that's a little more 'literary' ". The more I thought about it though, my main goal was reading, and there was no doubt that he would read this book, as it was a topic that was of real interest to him. So I allowed him to purchase it with the stipulation that he could build nothing in the book without coming to me for approval first. Things like fire kites and tennis ball mortars will never get approval.

It worked. He's definitely been reading the book. I allowed him to make paper match rockets once. Those were unimpressive if I remember correctly. A more apt name might have been paper match duds. His next main project from the book was a air compressed potato cannon. I gave approval of this project, but told him he could not start building it until after his school summer reading projects were completed. This involved reading two books and writing a report/answering essay questions for each book. It's amazing how much better of a student Alex is when he has the right motivation. On Tuesday Alex finish his projects and, as promised, I took him to Home Depot to purchase al the items needed to make his potato cannon. We put it together yesterday evening and allowed it to dry overnight. This is the finished product....

Basically you put a potato in one end, and, using a bicycle pump or air compressor, fill up the other end with air (It has a pressure guage to make sure you don't put too much air into it). Turn the valve to release the air and POOF, there goes a flying potato. We'll see how it works tonight.

The arrows are the aisles, and in them they rolled the performers by on rolly cart things... most of you probably know what I mean. Anyway, because of the set-up, and the relative smallness of the venue, you could ALWAYS see them clearly, and half the time they were super close (close enough to see you, too!) It was friggin' excellent.

They sang some songs I don't know / haven't heard in years and forget (I'm not sure which). One of them had them repeating over and over (while the text flew by on the big screen in huge ornate letters) "RUB MY KNEE! RUB MY KNEE TOBE!" What.

At the end of one of the MC segments, Inocchi and Nagano were yammering while the others got changed. They were trying to impersonate each other, but they realized they didn't really know how to. They tried for a while, and it was silly. Then the others came back and tried to imitate Nagano, and it just didn't work, but was hilarious.

Before 蝶, they had Sakamoto tap dance for like, two minutes. It was bizarre. He was good, and stuff, but it was really weird.

They did "Made in Japan" and "Thunderbird - Your Voice", which was fucking excellent! I didn't expect it.

The girl behind me had a huge home-made Inocchi uchiwa, and an Inocchi hand puppet. She was totally smitten, but was getting disappointed, because he was always either not-in-the-middle (where we were), or when he was, he was looking the wrong way. Near the end, though, he saw her, smiled and waved as he made eye contact, and she squealed and had to be held up by her friends.

If you bought the "Vibes" DVD thinger, there was a paper inside with a cell phone website and a code, and you could put that in within 3 hours of the end of your concert (along with the concert venue code, to prove you had been to that concert), and download a photo of the group taken that night. I forgot both my sheets at home, and got home too late. It's not a problem though, because it would be tiny res, and trapped on my cell phone.

They did "Light in Your Heart", and I'm not sure what to think of it. I mean, I think it was good, but (1) it was really loud and I was deaf by that time, so I couldn't really hear clearly -- additionally I was too busy trying to keep my dental work from rattling out of place because of the bass and (2) Leather jackets and wife beaters :) It suited Ken best, though.

For an "encore", they came out and did "Honey Beat", "心からの歌", then spoke about the end of 学校へ行こう, then did a retrospective of the past 11 years in video while they sang "Believe". Then they left. Then they came out for the real encore, which was "本気がいっぱい".

After the encore, I was trapped in Block A3 because everyone in my section refused to believe that it was, in fact, over. Even when the security people started saying, "Yes, it's really over, move along now!" they kept chanting for another encore, despite the fact that Ken had blown everyone a kiss, which is the traditional end of the show, you see. Just as they were starting to come to grips with it being the end, some random staff member rustled a curtain in the entrance to stage, and everyone saw it and squealed and the chanting began again in earnest. 20 minutes later, I finally got out.

Then getting out of the parking lot was difficult, what with the shitty light, and the scads of people who drove. Took another 20 minutes to get out of there. Stopped at a convenience store down the road to grab a quick bite to eat before hopping on the highway again, and in honour of the concert, I guess, they were playing V6 oldies. I walked in to "Music for the People", and it just stayed in the pre-2000 era while I was there.

As for the drive, there was hardcore torrential rain for about 20 minutes on my way there, just around Toyama City, and on the way back, there was torrential rain in between two of the 26 tunnels between Asahi and Joetsu -- but I was only out of a tunnel and in that rain for all of 300m, so it was okay. What wasn't okay was the 35km stretch between Joetsu and Nagaoka where they'd reduced the highway to one lane in each direction by setting up pylons blocking it off and saying it was for "Construction", but in all that 35km, I saw one piece of heavy machinery, and 200m of ripped up road. What the FUCK.

All in all, it was a fucking excellent day, and I'm really really pleased. Only way I could be more pleased is if people weren't so uptight about bringing cameras into the venue and taking a couple snapshots. -_-

Anyway, now it's 2am, and I actually technically have work in 6 hours (haaaaaaa like I'm gonna show up then, though), so I'm off to bed!

This is in contrast to the Beloved, who having come more from the academic world than my corporate-dominated life had gravitated to Apple products. Look how beautiful, she would say! (Look how expensive, I would retort)… Look! No viruses, she would cheer! (Protection software works fine, I’d grumble). I was sticking to my guns, dammit. Apples had always seemed a little too much style over substance, perhaps and there was a whiff of “hippie” that kept me resisting.

Then, I got an iPod a couple of years ago, and realized that ok, sure – iTunes is really a lot easier than what I had been using. Fine. But I could use it on my PC with no problems. It wasn’t like I was giving in, right?

And then my Dell started getting a little long in the tooth and there were noises about getting a new computer for my birthday. And then about a month ago – despite my protective software – there was a bad bad virus infestation. My trusty old Dell ground to a halt, and the choice was made.

So, I welcomed a new gadget into my life – a gorgeous 20” iMac. It’s big, shiny, pretty and super-fast. This weekend I spent some time moving over files (music, photos, financial, etc.) from the Dell to the new computer. Pretty easy.

Easy Toffee Bars

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

1 pkg saltine crackers (I've used ritz in a pinch and they are even better!)

1 cup salted butter

1 cup brown sugar

12 oz chocolate chips (I used a half bag of white choc. chips and nutella today, since I didn't have choc. chips)

We kept the snake locked up in an aquarium last night. I just wasn't comfortable with just letting him go. Just letting him go meant he was in my yard somewhere. I like snakes much better when I know exactly where they are, like the zoo. I was afraid if I let him go, he'd sneak up on me or eat one of my chipmunks.

This morning, Steve picked him up and put him in a smaller cage. He took him to work and released him by the water. Yes, he drove over an hour with only a thin sheet of plastic between him and the snake. What if it had gotten loose in the car? He's brave. That's why I love him. Now the snake is over an hour from my backyard. That makes me happy.
